9 Photos From Ware’s New Skatepark Opening That Will Help The Local Skate Scene Thrive

A new skatepark that will allow the local skate scene to thrive has opened in Ware. Ware Mayor Ian Kemp declared the new facility officially open at a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Saturday (April 2), which was also attended by fellow councilors Rishi Fernando, Martin Butcher, Phyllis Ballam and Mark Pope .

The skatepark’s opening “jam” offered a host of activities, including workshops and free lessons for beginners with ABC Skateboarding and competitions for the best tricks. A DJ was on hand to create an atmosphere for high-octane stunts as the more experienced showed off their best kickflips, ollies and tailwhips.

The new skate park, which replaces the old wooden ramps with a purpose-built facility, was commissioned by Ware Town Council, with the support of Section 106 funding from East Herts District Council. Its build team, Betongpark Ltd, which joined skateboarders, BMXs and scooters at the opening, has deep roots in the skateboarding community.

The skatepark was also designed with considerable local user involvement and input from Active East Herts and the Hertfordshire County Council’s Services for Young People Youth Forum for Ware and Hertford. Renowned street artist Charles Uzzell Edwards – better known as Pure Evil – designed a custom Skate Ware logo for the park, which was reproduced on t-shirts sold by the youth group at the opening.

The group also raised funds by selling raffle tickets with prizes, including a brand new Mafia Bomma bike donated by Highway Cycles. Ware-based graphic designer Chris Page spent his time creating and painting a graphic wall scheme on the entrance ramps in a red, black and blue geometric pattern.

Sean Higgins, Ware Town Council’s Chief Financial Officer, said: ‘A big thank you to everyone who came out to our grand opening and made it a huge success. It was great to see the skatepark come to life.
