Big leap forward for cashew cultivation in Koraput


Koraput: The undivided district of Koraput has a suitable climate and soil conditions suitable for planting cashew nuts. Cash cropping contributes to the generation of livelihoods for farmers, according to a report.

As part of the initiative, the Odisha Cashew Development Corporation (OCDC), a state government enterprise, will plant more than 15 lakhs in the district and provide assistance to farmers who resume priority planting, according to the report. .

This is what Amarendra Das, president of the OCDC, said here. Das was speaking to a Krushak Mela at the OCDC division office on Friday. As the main guest, Das opened the mela and briefed the participants on various cashew plantation projects. Over 400 main farmers from various parts of the district participated in the Krushak Mela.

With the aim of increasing cashew production in the state, this year the OCDC aims to plant high-yielding hybrid cashew plants for more production by spending over Rs 1.20 crore in eight districts of the state, he said. This year, OCDC aims to plant cashew seedlings on more than 1,000 hectares in the undivided district of Koraput.

Under this program, nurseries will be developed in Podagad and Borigumma to produce more than 15 lakh of saplings which will be planted in the area to increase cashew production.

Sanjib Kumar Mohanta, Division Director, OCDC, chaired the meeting which was also attended by VN Haveli, Director of National Cashew and Coco Development Corporation. Haveli called on farmers to focus more on growing cashew nuts and pushing it forward.

Guest of honor, Dr. Manas Ranjan Nayak, scientist Krushi Vigyan Kendra in Semiliguda, explained how to take care of the soil and plants for growing cashew. Scientist Dr Mihir Ranjan Mohanty explained how to prepare the land for growing cashew and paddy while Ashok Senapati, additional project manager of the Soil Conservation Department, called on farmers to build agricultural ponds for free.
