SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Old Spanish Days is a time of gatherings, festivals, and vintage attire, which serves businesses well if they specialize in fiesta outfits and interior design decor.
The enthusiasm is already apparent with flags, banners and window designs at Santa Barbara businesses.
The 98th Spanish Days of Santa Barbara begins on August 3.
The Vintage Fox Antiques and The Story Vintage Clothing at 609 Chapala St. are already setting up displays and special clothing shelves for those ready to immerse themselves in Fiesta.
This will include specially selected items for Fiesta parties, decorations for the home and also just what you will wear to one of the many scheduled events. It could be an outing to see a fashion show or a high-end fundraiser.
At Vintage Fox Antiques, Ashley Fox said, “Fiesta is so much fun because it’s the epitome of Santa Barbara and it’s like nowhere else. The whole town is a party.”
In her new exhibit, “I’ve got old Fiesta posters and pins and margarita glasses and everything you need to make a party fun, I’ve got it.” Some objects date from the 1950s.
Walking around a display, she says, the table gypsy cart will sell out quickly, “they’ll put shot glasses in there.” Two were already in the car.
There were also flags, baskets, vases and candle holders.
In the back building and courtyard, Nina Quiros of vintage clothing store The Story showed off several shelves of colorful clothing for Fiesta.
From the shelves she pulled out boots, tutus, hats and a pair of multicolored women’s shoes that were all ready for a night out on the town for a Fiesta party. “Aren’t they amazing? We just took them out, little healers, you can dance the night away.”
Quiros also takes repurposed clothes and adds special features to them, making them one of a kind. “Hopefully we’ll bring people here because we have some really fun stuff,” she said while wearing one of the outfits she plans to sell soon.
Its racks have men’s and women’s clothing. There are also plenty of items to mix and match to get multiple uses from one purchase.
One display had a “70s vintage shirt and they’re really hard to find and this one is in great shape and it’s white.”
During the Fiesta, both stores will also host a party for customers. “I’ll decorate the back patio with textiles and brightly colored things and then I’ll have beer and fries and people can drop by,” Fox said.
