Support is on the way for workers and businesses affected by Sydney’s latest virus lockdown, with the federal and state governments considering options.
A host of industry organizations have called for some form of financial assistance, with the lockdown damage bill expected to run into the hundreds of millions.
This is the city’s first foreclosure without the JobKeeper program and comes in the last week of year-end sales.
NSW Premier says help is coming
Up to $ 750 million in “carnage” could be inflicted on retailers alone, the National Retail Association said, while the Accommodation Association says the move has caused occupancy rates to drop across the country.
Sydney Mayor Clover Moore, Business NSW and the Sydney Committee are also among those calling for support to be made quickly available.
Announcing a two-week city-wide lockdown on Saturday afternoon, Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian said help was on the way.
“No one should feel stressed about their financial situation,” she said.
“We will be announcing, as state government in the coming days, support for businesses. Federal government support for households comes into effect at some point.
“No one should feel stressed or pressured to break any of the rules because of their financial situation.”
Federal government support
Federal government assistance of up to $ 500 – the COVID-19 Disaster Payments – will come into effect July 1 for those unable to travel to work due to lockdown restrictions in Sydney City, Waverley, Randwick, Canada Bay, Inner West, Bayside and Woollahra.
The payment will go into effect July 4 for eligible people in other areas under the Greater Sydney Lockdown.
Those eligible for payment will receive $ 500 if they lost 20 or more hours of work, and $ 325 if they lost less than 20 hours of work.
To be eligible, individuals must not have more than $ 10,000 in cash or receive other payments.
More information will be provided next week before the payments go into effect, Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud said on Saturday.
The federal government has said that people may also be eligible for Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment and Job Seeker Payment.
