French startup Jow has raised a $ 20 million funding round led by Eurazeo. Jow wants to make cooking at home easier by taking care of menu ideas and helping you manage your grocery orders online. The company has partnered with national food retailers to ensure your order is seamlessly processed through your regular grocery store.

In addition to Eurazeo, existing investors Headline, DST and Stride.VC are also participating in today’s round table. Founded in 2018, Jow has already raised $ 1.5 million in October 2018 and $ 7 million in December 2019.

It’s easier to describe Jow by describing what service isn’t. Jow is not a grocery delivery service. Jow is also not a food delivery company that lets you choose ready meals.

When you sign up for Jow, you first describe how it is at home. How many adults and children live in your home? Are there any food allergies or specific restrictions? Do you have a microwave or a blender?

After that, Jow will recommend a few meals for the next week. You can review and personalize each meal. For example, you can replace something if you don’t feel like eating it. You can also add or remove people for each meal.

Jow automatically generates a list of items to purchase to prepare these meals. The startup tries to be as efficient as possible, which means you won’t end up with three bottles of olive oil if you need olive oil in three different meals. At the end of the shopping journey, you can add housewares, drinks, and anything not already on the list.

The company does not process your order directly. Jow transfers your item list to a large supermarket near you. You can choose where you want to buy your food. The startup has partnered with the six largest grocery stores in France, Carrefour, Auchan, Intermarché, Leclerc, Monoprix and Chronodrive, which represents more than 4,000 stores across the country.

You can login to your preferred retailer using your existing login details from any of these brands. You can also choose between curbside pickup or door-to-door delivery.

Online grocery shopping is nothing new. But the experience hasn’t changed much over the past few years. You have to know what you are looking for. The articles are simply sorted into different categories and you get a grid of articles in each category.

That’s why it’s always difficult to plan ahead and order online. There are three ways to solve this problem: you can be well prepared and plan your week, you can rely on instant grocery services that promise you deliveries in about 15 minutes, or you simply avoid the problem by ordering food. on Deliveroo, Uber Meals and other food delivery services.

Jow believes that improving meal planning can change the way you interact with online grocery shopping. By removing the complexities, you could end up ordering less on food delivery services, saving money, and reducing waste. Preparing a meal at home is always the most environmentally friendly option.

And it is also an effective strategy in terms of capital. The startup has only 35 employees and does not own any food products. It generates income from grocers.

Overall, Jow users have ordered 20 million meals through the app. Almost 70% of the products in a customer’s basket come from the company’s revenue.

Jow closed its funding round earlier this year and announces it today. The company plans to expand to new countries starting with the United States. It will face competition from other meal planning startups, such as Kitchenful.
